This is a bed warmer..... or a heating pad, to be heated up in the microwave. You've seen these. They are filled with rice or wheat. I've made these before. The first ones I made were smaller; about the size to use as a toe warmer or hand warmer that will just fit in a pocket.
At Christmas time the small ones were used a lot and requests were made for larger ones. As I was tidying up my sewing table, I found the leftover fabric from B's old shirt. I used some of it in the first braided rug I made and had a bit of fabric leftover. I hated to throw it away. About ten minutes later (from start to finish), I had made three warming bags filled with wheat from our storage. Rice works well too. I thought of a great way to fill them. Funnels work but take a long time. I got out a pastry bag with a large hole in the bottom. I didn't put a pastry tip in but used the bag as a funnel. I poured the wheat from a paper cup; no fuss no mess!
It was time well spent, especially with the cold weather we're having. The beds will be warm tonight.

Could use some more of these as well around here, has been very cold ! Warm weather headed our way we are told.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to make some of those bags, but have never managed it. I think I worry that I'll somehow get bad rice or wheat or whatever and end up with a moldy mess. We could sure use them on cold nights though -- they sound really cozy!
ReplyDeleteGood tips on filling those warming pouches.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea!
ReplyDeleteI've noticed if I place a rice bag at my feet before bed, it's usually still warm when I get up in the morning :)
I'd bet that your bed warmers will stay warm all night too .
friends,
K.
I remember that someone gave one of these warmers to my daughter when she was married in the Mt. Timpanogos temple on a freezing day in Dec. 2003 (biggest storm in five years)to keep her a little bit warmer while photos were taken outside(I don't know where they were warmed up).
ReplyDeleteOur black lab, Riley, is our bed warmer:)
Sounds like a great idea. There have been bed warmers for centuries!
