When summer wanes (we briefly had snow last week here) my thoughts turn to warm fires and warm feet. I start thinking about wool socks; soft, warm wool socks; hand-knit of course. My motto used to be, "Why knit socks, when Nordstrom sells such fine ones?" And then I made myself a pair... and another pair. I admire those knitters who knit a pair per month. I am not one of those knitters. But I brought home some indigo Koigu sock yarn from Imaginknit in San Francisco (as you can tell from the previous post, I don't buy normal souvenirs) and have been itching to cast on for a pair winter socks.
I used Judy's magic cast on for the first time and I am in love. I like the toe-up sock method and this cast on is just perfect. I'm halfway through the first sock, Wendy Johnson's toe-up Mock Cable sock pattern. Let's hope the second sock isn't far behind because we have sun and warmer weather this week but I'm afraid it won't last.

Ooooh that yarn is just gorgeous!!! I LOVE koigu yarn -- it's so soft and yummy. I've always wanted to make socks with it, but I think it has to be washed by hand? My socks have to go into the machine -- 'cause they'll end up there anyway, whether I have any say-so about it or not! Your cable pattern looks really pretty too!
ReplyDeleteLove that sock! I just started sock knitting in January and fist got Crock-O-Dye in that same lush indigo that you have. One pair and I was hooked too. I am in the middle of a pair for a sister in law for Christmas. Happy knitting~:lara
ReplyDeleteThis sock yarn does say hand wash on the label. I am bad...I just wash all my hand knit socks in cold water on the gentle cycle in the washing machine. Please note that I do have a front loader which does not agitate as much as a top loader will. I put them in a lingerie bag and then let them air dry on a rack, never putting them in the dryer. I take the lazy way out but I haven't had a sock shrink yet so I will continue to wash them this way.
ReplyDeleteOh, Bonnie! Your socks are gorgeous! Bravo! I have so many books filled with sock patterns and I have only completed one sock and it was very big and looked super silly. I must try again!
ReplyDeleteOh pretty socks Bonnie! Love the color. And I used to be of the Nordstrom (or Walmart ;) school of sock buying too until I made my first pair -- no comparison is there? Didn't Dumbledore say in one of the Harry Potters that hand knit socks are the best gift of all -- or something like that ;)?
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
G
SO cozy!
