Koolhaas Hat times 2

Brooke wanted a project and she needed a new beanie, so she made Jared Flood's Koolhaas Hat in Heather gray wool.  The hat looked like a fun, quick knit so I made one for Erin too.  I loved this pattern, with one caveat (read on).  It was fun to knit and I worked the cable without a cable needle, which is a much quicker and more efficient way to go, so it worked up really quickly; about a day and a half.
I thought the original pattern photo showed the beanie a "bit short" on the models.  Did they just have long heads?  I suggested Brooke make the longer version.  It covered her eyebrows, was much too long and bunched at the neckline.  So I knit Erin's Hat as per the original pattern.  It came out too short and didn't even begin to cover her ears.   Both of my daughters have different length heads but the Hat as written was too short for both of them.  There was frogging involved on both beanies; one for being too short and one for being too long.
In the end, my solution was to add an extra half diamond to the original pattern and to shift the round marker by two.  It worked wonderfully and both beanies came out perfectly sized the second time around.  I would definitely suggest trying the beanie on the intended recipient before beginning the decrease rounds and making adjustments as necessary.
Hat knit following Flood's original instructions...too short.
After adding extra repeats to the original pattern...just right and the ears are covered.
Come back for a tutorial on lining the Hat for wool sensitive wearers.

Happy New Year!

  4. Cute beanie, and an even cuter model :)

It looks like you are getting some fun projects made.

I'm going to work on painting trim today, and getting ready to re-paint the bathroom.
I picked up the paint in Provo this past week, and I'm looking forward to getting it done.

Have a happy and creative weekend.

  6. Checked in today and saw your beautiful desk and windsor chair. Missed the vintage Good Housekeeping cover, but the furniture was a treat.
