My New Favorite Fall Breakfast

Early mornings are a bit nippy now that Fall is just around the corner.  I love hot cereal for breakfast this time of year.  Whole grains are healthful and I love the nutty texture and flavor, but cereal can be a bit boring.

A new cafe opened in our small town and they serve breakfast.  I didn't want a heavy serving of pancakes or french toast or the Farmer's breakfast; a gigantic plate of eggs, potatoes, and MEAT, so I opted for the hot cereal.  I must admit I didn't have extremely high expectations.  Hot cereal is pretty predictable and a bit boring, after all it's just grains.  It certainly didn't look like much.  What I got was a delicious blend of textures; slightly sweetened from the applesauce and the pinch of brown sugar. It was unexpectedly (and surprisingly) delicious.

Das Cafe serves theirs with a squirt of whipping cream; I leave it off.
Try it and be pleasantly surprised.  It might even become your new favorite breakfast.

Hot cooked Applesauce 5 Grain Cereal

Purchased 5 Grain Cereal Mix (I like Bob's)
Applesauce (I use my own homemade apple/cinnamon sauce)
brown sugar
whipped cream (optional)

Cook your cereal according to the directions on the package (I use the Microwave).  It's so easy to make one or two portions.
Ladle into serving bowls.
Top with a small portion of brown sugar and applesauce.  Garnish with a squirt of whipping cream if you like.

Eat warm.

  2. My husband loves his spaghetti Bolognaise served with applesauce. This sounds like a perfect breakfast with some homemade granola.

We've not been to Das Cafe yet.
However, thanks to your post, I'll know just what to order.

  5. Yum! It definitely sounds like a fall kind of recipe.

Is this your home in the photo at the top of the blog? It is such a lovely photo-whether it be your home or not---it is definitely magazine worthy! :)

  6. Yummy! Applesauce is one of my top foods this season. I eat oatmeal on the weekends because it upsets my stomach a tiny bit and I don't like to feel cramped at school. I'd leave off the whip cream, too! Thanks, Bonnie!
