What the heck is a wattle?

Have you heard of them?  I am not talking about the dangling piece of flesh that hangs from a chicken's neck.  I am referring to the wattle that is fencing.  Specifically, it's a fence made from flexible pieces of wood woven through straight posts.  And we made one this weekend.
We have a row of cat mint that gets lanky and leans over the grass and the new little rose bush behind it against the picket fence.  Last fall it hung so far over the bed that the grass around the bed died, so this year we killed "two birds with one stone" so to speak.  We cut the new shoots from around our pioneer trees and recycled them into fencing.

Now if only the grass would fill in soon.  We had a dry winter and the snowpack is melting fast.  Water will be scarce this summer and the grass will need all the help it can get.

  1. The only wattle I'd heard of was a rooster's. Yours is very pretty -- thanks for the education!

  2. I didn't know the name but I have seen that type of fencing used here in New Hampshire. You made yours look like it was done by a pro.

  3. I have only heard of the wattle you mentioned:) Love the look of your new wattle. That's so neat that you used your shoots from your tree!

  4. Did not know this. Love your perfect little fence. I need some around my herb garden to keep the chickens with the other wattle out!

  5. I was hoping this wasn't a post about saggy under-the-chin skin! I LOVE your garden wattle. Never heard it called that, but I'm glad I know. We had a dry winter with little run-off so we're hoping yet for more spring rains.

  10. Hi Bonnie!
    VERY cool! Good idea!
I like twigs and twiggy structures. Your catnip will lure all the neighborhood cats and I can see them hopping over the wattle for a dose of crazy weed!
