Oops...off to buy a birthday cake.

I've been baking a long time and very rarely have an outright disaster.  I can usually read a recipe and take steps to divert a problem or pick another recipe.

Not this time.  There were no clues or warnings that this might happen.  I used the proper tools and ingredients; measured them correctly.  I wonder who proof read/tested this recipe?  No one.
The first sign of a problem.....the batter rose in the first 10 minutes.  Look at the odd center.

Oh....oh.  Thank goodness for the tray underneath the pans.

It was supposed to be a gingerbread cake.  It tastes and looks terrible.  Not even going to waste the cream cheese icing.  Not even going to try to correct the recipe at a later date.  Cake and recipe are both now in the garbage can.

When I have a flop....it's a BIG FLOP.

  1. So what did you do instead, baker Bonnie? I bought the pies because I didn't think I had the energy to bake them and they were terrible. The banana cream tasted like glue, the pumpkin (well, store bought pumpkin pie is always fake) and the cherry pie was too sweet. Gingerbread sounds refreshing.

  2. Oh dear! My DIL had this happen with a cake once. She dumped the whole thing too -- recipe and all. Frustrating!

  4. Oh my goodness! What in the world happened. It looks like too much baking powder or something. I would like to see that recipe. Sometimes it is good to show our disasters. Good for you Bonnie.

  5. Oh, no! That exact thing happened to me with a dessert once and I was silly enough to try it again, sure that it would come out better the next time. Nope!

  6. Ooops ... sorry! Isn't that annoying though -- all that time and effort and nothing to show for it!

  8. That would make me throw the recipe away too! I would find something else to use the cream cheese icing on though:)
