Sisters

Those beautiful mountains are called the 3 Sisters.  They're in Oregon and some of you quilters might recognize them as the backdrop of the largest outdoor quilt show in the world.  It's held every year on the 2nd saturday in July...for 33 years... in Sisters, Oregon.

Mr. City Home and I spent last week in Oregon.  The weather was lovely from the sea coast to the high mountain valleys.  People in Oregon take their events seriously.  Outside of Eugene on Friday, we came across a Country fair.  Cars were lined up along the highway for miles.  Coming into Sisters on Saturday, traffic was backed up 5 miles from town.  This photo was taken about an hour before the show started.  It reminds me of Main Street USA in Disneyland at the opening.
As promised there were quilts hanging everywhere in town.  Inside, outside, high, low, and even from the trees.  Lots and lots of quilts of every theme and color combination.

Here are some of my favorite quilts.
Some were artsy: some traditional.  I loved the technique and use of color and applique that made up this trout!

These were made by employees of the Stitchin' Post, whose owner started the show and they hang on the side of the quilt store.
One challenge was based on Peter Pan.
This was is a traditional block made with contemporary colors and into a contemporary shape.

And this crowd favorite... the original blocks were made from old family dresses.  I always love this kind of quilt with sentimental value.  I would love to design my own take on this, maybe adding some kind of border.

I'm glad we went to Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show.  It didn't dissapoint.

Have you been to the show?  What did you think of it?

  1. If I had to live in an Eastern Oregon city I'd choose Sisters. I've never spent much time there but only driven through to and from BYU in the summers. I love it there though. It's so cute. I also love that you were by Eugene during the Country Fair. They don't mess around. Glad you didn't stop though, it's a little too hippie free-love for me (and a little too much nudity!) I love the quits you took pictures of. They're so beautiful. If you're ever out East you should go to Amish country and visit some of the quilt shows/"museums" they have. You'd love them.

  2. I love a quilt with sentiment too, that one with the dresses is so fab. I haven't even heard of this show, but it sounds awesome. I'm glad to have 'come along' with you! :)

  6. Thanks for all of your comments.

Lauren, We thought about you as we drove through Eugene. The crowd was CRAZY large. We've been to Lancaster county and actually own two Amish quilts but it's been a long time. I'd love to go again.

  8. I'm glad that you enjoyed our beautiful state and were able to attend the Sister's Quilt show. It is fabulous. I lived in Bountiful 35 years ago and still miss it. The people were the most friendly of any of the places I have ever lived.

  10. I came to this blog on a link sent to my by my sister - the current one titled " The Old Iron Lady". She is a canner and a gardener, but knew I'd love the story about the Passat iron - which sounds like a dream iron if there ever was one. I'm a seamstress, dearly attached to my iron ( currently my second Rowenta steam generator ). I decided to keep reading since I also love to cook, sometimes knit, and quilt a lot.
Going back a bit, I found this page - and I am so amazed that you featured my dresses quilt! Thank you for the compliments! Funny, pictures of this quilt have turned up in several random places. I am planning on making a pattern for it ( soon, I hope ).
I've added your blog to my reader, and hope to keep finding lots of things of interest here.
    Renee
