Masaman (Muslim) Curry

It's cold today and that calls for heartier dinner fare.  Thai food is warm in temperature and warm in spice and fits the bill perfectly.  I've been wanting to try my hand at making Masaman Curry.  While spicy, it's not as spicy as some Thai dishes,  and if you're making it  you can adjust the heat level to your taste.  I used yellow curry paste instead of red, because we like it but traditionally most recipes call for red paste. Serve it over rice; almost like a Thai stew.

Purchase your ingredients at an Asian Market.  They are much less expensive there and you will have more selection than in a supermarket.  A tub of curry paste will make many recipes so the initial investment in ingredients goes a long way.  Add any meat that you like, or use tofu for a vegetarian dish.

This dish is fast to prepare. A bit of chopping and then everything simmers in the pot for a while; much faster than most of the soups I make.  Steam some Jasmine rice and you're good to go.  I wish I had some green garnish.  It would have looker so much better.  Believe me, it tastes great.

  1. Hmmm. People are always extolling the virtues of a good curry, but somehow I've never tried it. The only curry I've really liked is Currywurst. Thanks for sharing your recipe -- it does look good!

  2. Yummy! You always give me good ideas, Bonnie! I AM going to visit the Asian market and buy some goodies. My Indian student, my Egyptian student, and my Korean students might give me some tips. If not, I can ask their parents at conferences this week. I get tired of talking "school talk" with them. Why not talk food?
