Quail over board....Help!!!

We have a covey of quail that live in our back yard.  They mostly drive me crazy; they make a lot of noise in the early morning when we are trying to sleep.  They dig huge holes in my garden as they hunt for bugs, sometimes disrupting my new vegetables in the process.  But I do love to watch them.  Every year they hatch new chicks(?).  The new babies hatched sometime in the last day or two.  I counted at least 9.  It's fun to watch the parents herding them around the yard, in and out of the bushes. As I was watching from the window I saw two tiny chicks walk out from under the ivy and straight into the window well.

Of course they can't fly yet and couldn't get out.  Mom shrieked for a bit and then lit out after another chick, leaving them there.  They hopped and chirped and then resigned themselves to their plight.  Cardboard box to the rescue.

I let them hop into the box and then set it down on the pavement by the garden.

They soon hopped out.  I was afraid that Mom had forgotten about them but they later made their way back to the garden.  Now if they would just stop digging holes.

I picked another 2 gallons of raspberries this morning.  Do you like my handy-dandy raspberry bucket?  It's great for leaving my hands free to pick.  I just thread it through a belt around my waste and pick away.  Now if I could just get someone.....anyone......else in the family to pick with it I'd be happy.

  1. Birds can be a problem. We have baby birds in our chimney. This is the second year that a Mother bird has built her nest down inside the flue. We are afraid that the babies will never be able to fly straight up to get out like last year. Next year we are putting a screen over the top. Your raspberries look wonderful.

Wow, you really have a wealth of raspberries...what a dream:)
Lastly, that cheese bread looks like a professional artisan bread! I'm going to have to dig into my book(I have the first one, not the "healthy" one)and go for it!

  7. They are soooo cute!! Unfortunately, with our cats, we don't see many baby birds around here.

  8. I have them too, and they do the same thing!! So many holes, I thought it was my dog until I caught them. Do they eat your plants too? Because my plants are being eaten by something and I can't figure out what. I thought it was catapillars, and then I sprayed. Then I put chicken wire all around and my yard is walled. Any suggestions?
