The mountains above our valley are on fire. Sadly 65 buildings have burned, some livestock, and lots of hard work and dreams have gone up in smoke. The cause appears to be theivery of copper wire from electrical poles which sparked. It's a travesty that a small amount of cash for metal can cause this. The damage estimate is 8 million and it's only 8 percent contained. We could see the fire from our bedroom window for the last two nights. It's just about 8 miles away from our town.
We are praying for rain. Our ground is dry and brittle. It was a dry winter and the snowpack is alreayd gone and irrigation water rationing has begun. We hope the drinking water holds out. Fire season usually starts in late August and it's only June. It's going to be a long summer. So many of the western states have fires burning and there is so much devastation. Thousands of brave firefighters are on the front lines trying to salvage our beautiful wild areas on the ground and from the air. The water being used to fight this fire is precious.
Hopefully, awareness will kick in and people will use common sense the rest of the summer.
